When we think of summer camps all sorts of images come up; trees, evening campfires, swimming pools. We don’t usually ever think of beaches and surfboards though, when we think about summer camps. Could you ever imagine that a summer camp would be about beaches and surfboards!

Surf Camp Inc., located in Wrightsville, NC, has a summer camp most people wouldn’t dream of in a million years! A summer camp that’s a surf camp! Who’d a thunk it. You’d have to ask Rick Civelli, marine science teacher and the founder of Surf Camp Inc.

Ever since 1995 when Rick developed a marine science educational learn to surf program for the local aquarium he’s been teaching folks, young and old, how to surf with an eye to ecological awareness. From all of this teaching and his education in Environmental Studies and Coastal Geology came Surf Camp Inc.

The camp, which by the way isn’t just for kids, has lots to do. Of course there’s activities associated with environmental learning and surfing, but island-hopping! How cool is that! And we’re not just talking about the islands off the beautiful North Carolina coast, either. They take their camps to places like Costa Rica and Hawaii, too!

In 2002 Disney came to them. That’s right! In 2002 Surf Camp Inc. was selected by Disney as the only surf camp in America to promote their 2002 summer blockbuster, Lilo and Stitch. Disney even went so far as to partner with major radio stations across the country and gave away Ultimate Surf Camp Adventures at Surf Camp Inc. as grand prizes to winners in each of those cities.

Every day Joes aren’t the only ones that have received free get-aways to Surf Camp. Not so long ago, Surf Camp Inc. was selected by an exclusive NYC talent and brokering firm to be included in the VIP Celebrity Gift Baskets that were given out after a party attended by quite a few celebs. Carson Daly, Christina Aguliera, Justin Timberlake, Lisa Marie Presley, Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Ethan Hawke, Ed Norton, Selma Hayek, Alicia Silverstone and Ashanti, to name a few, have all received a Surf Camp t-shirt and a week at Surf Camp.

Many publications have taken notice of Surf Camp, too. Time Magazine, Women’s Day, Fine Living, SG Surf Snow Skate Girl Magazine, Travel and Leisure, National Geographic, and yes, Surfing Magazine among others have all written stories about Surf Camp Inc.

Oh, the days when summer camps were all the rage! Every year, thousands of girls either dread or look forward to attending several days or several weeks at a girl’s summer camp. For most, girls camps mean fun in the sun, laughs and new friends. Many girls spend weeks looking forward to camp activities and events, while others aren’t so sure.

Girls camps offer a multitude of activities to suit nearly every taste, but most offer summer activities like swimming, horseback riding, water skiing, rock climbing, arts and crafts and drama, just to name a few.

Depending on the wants and needs of large groups of girls in different parts of the country, girls camps also offer canoeing, river rafting, hiking or even fashion events. The sky is the limit when it comes to ideas, and camp counselors do their best to make sure that everyone has fun during their camp stay.

Basketball Summer Camps 2007

There are many summer camps that now specialize in providing training in basketball skills and techniques. The instruction available ranges from basic to classes provided by professional players.

Some camps even specialize as to position such as basketball point guard camps. The more advanced camps usually are segregated as to basketball camp boys and basketball camp girls so training can be geared specifically to a level of competence.

Some are basketball overnight camps and some are day camps with no sleepover capabilities. If your child is an experienced and advanced player it’s likely they would prefer training by elite athletes, on the other hand if you are just concerned with aquainting your child with the game a more basic type of camp will probably suffice. THe costs are generally reflective of the quality of instructors as well.

One of the more renown summer basketball camps is the Michael Jordan Basketball Camp

Boy Summer Camps

I get quite a few questions asking if a boys summer camp or a girls summer camp is preferrable to a coed summer camp.

I don’t believe there is an all encompassing answer to this question but there are certain situations where a single gender camp may be a better choice for your child. Depending on your child’s age the single gender camp environment often allows the child to be themselves and not be concerned with impressing or competing with the opposite sex. You may also find that in many cases single gender camps gear programs to gender strengths and weaknesses.

I think it’s probably a good idea to discuss the two options with your child and you might be surprised that they may have there very own legitimate reason for preferring one type of camp to the other.

One consideration is that co-ed camps obviously mirror real life situations more closely but also remember that the camp experience is a very short portion of your child’s year.

Some sport specific summer camps may be geared to one gender or the other and some academic camps have reported the single sex environment provides fewer distractions to campers trying to grasp complex ideas in a short duration camp.

If you have an opinion on this topic, please leave a comment.

One of the recent trends in specialty summer camps is the introduction of weight loss camps with curriculums specifically tailored to overweight children and teens. These camps have been unfortunately and insentively referred to as fat camps by some.

The general ideology behind these weight camps is to manage carefully the dietary intake of the campers while introducing appropriate levels of activity in order to reduce body fat levels.

It’s important to note that when camp ends the lessons learned at camp should be continued to insure the loss of weight is maintained and continued through healthy lifestyle choices.

My personal recommendation is a program introduced by WellSpring Weight Loss Camps who recommend a series of questions you should pose to prospective weight loss camp directors:

ADHD Summer Camps

ADHD Summer Camps by Dennis Driscoll

ADHD Summer Camps are a Great Way to Help Your Children Focus

Much like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) boarding schools, ADHD summer camps offer a chance for children with such a disorder to be part of an experience which will allow them to grow into better students and better individuals. These summer camps offer opportunities for those with ADHD to excel in areas of academics and social life, things that can often be difficult for those with a neurological disorder like ADHD.

5 Reasons to Pick a Gymnastics Camp by J Howard

There are a variety of reasons to attend and pick a particular gymnastics camp. Since we are so often asked for our opinion about which summer training camp is best, we thought we would lay out the criteria we use to choose.

Innovation

We are not unbiased in our choices as we run a summer training camp and we, of course, think it is an excellent choice. The reason our camp is unique and to be recommended is because of the innovative training concepts that we use. Our books are full of innovative concepts that we know are not being utilized anywhere else because we developed the concepts. Our camp offers many of the following advantages as well, but we don’t know of any other camp that is as innovation oriented as we are.

A High Level of Training Available

The second reason to attend and pick a gymnastics summer camp is the level of training available. Parents and gymnasts might choose a gymnastics camp run by a gym with coaches who have or are currently training Elite International competitors. That level of training is not available to every gymnast in every town. Thus the choice for a summer camp might be based on a high level of training and there are a limited number of gym camps that would qualify in this category. Parents and gymnast will likely look at the most successful gymnasts of the last year and check into attending camp at one of their gyms.
