When we think of summer camps all sorts of images come up; trees, evening campfires, swimming pools. We don’t usually ever think of beaches and surfboards though, when we think about summer camps. Could you ever imagine that a summer camp would be about beaches and surfboards!

Surf Camp Inc., located in Wrightsville, NC, has a summer camp most people wouldn’t dream of in a million years! A summer camp that’s a surf camp! Who’d a thunk it. You’d have to ask Rick Civelli, marine science teacher and the founder of Surf Camp Inc.

Ever since 1995 when Rick developed a marine science educational learn to surf program for the local aquarium he’s been teaching folks, young and old, how to surf with an eye to ecological awareness. From all of this teaching and his education in Environmental Studies and Coastal Geology came Surf Camp Inc.

The camp, which by the way isn’t just for kids, has lots to do. Of course there’s activities associated with environmental learning and surfing, but island-hopping! How cool is that! And we’re not just talking about the islands off the beautiful North Carolina coast, either. They take their camps to places like Costa Rica and Hawaii, too!

In 2002 Disney came to them. That’s right! In 2002 Surf Camp Inc. was selected by Disney as the only surf camp in America to promote their 2002 summer blockbuster, Lilo and Stitch. Disney even went so far as to partner with major radio stations across the country and gave away Ultimate Surf Camp Adventures at Surf Camp Inc. as grand prizes to winners in each of those cities.

Every day Joes aren’t the only ones that have received free get-aways to Surf Camp. Not so long ago, Surf Camp Inc. was selected by an exclusive NYC talent and brokering firm to be included in the VIP Celebrity Gift Baskets that were given out after a party attended by quite a few celebs. Carson Daly, Christina Aguliera, Justin Timberlake, Lisa Marie Presley, Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Ethan Hawke, Ed Norton, Selma Hayek, Alicia Silverstone and Ashanti, to name a few, have all received a Surf Camp t-shirt and a week at Surf Camp.

Many publications have taken notice of Surf Camp, too. Time Magazine, Women’s Day, Fine Living, SG Surf Snow Skate Girl Magazine, Travel and Leisure, National Geographic, and yes, Surfing Magazine among others have all written stories about Surf Camp Inc.

How to Find the Right Residential Summer Camp for Your Child

(ARA) - Many of today’s parents can remember going to a “sleepaway” summer camp some 20 or 30 years ago. Most look back at the experience with great fondness, when society and life in general seemed quieter, friendlier and simpler for children.

These days many of those same parents often dismiss the same summer camp experience for their own children. Why? Research conducted by the American Camp Association (ACA) shows that many parents are concerned about security for their children in our increasingly complex society and instinctively want to keep their children close and safe.

The same research, however, shows that parents want to provide the best opportunities for their children. They want them to have whatever it takes to be happy and successful — good health, the ability to get along with others, thinking and problem-solving skills, self-reliance and a good self-image.

It is interesting and helpful for parents to learn that what they want for their kids is still available — in a residential camp experience. According to Sam Cote, executive director of the family-owned Camp Lincoln for Boys and Camp Lake Hubert for Girls in Minnesota’s lake country, children need their own positive experiences of structured independence in a positive, nurturing environment away from the distractions of the city.

“We’ve found that, generally speaking, the younger the children are when they begin coming to our camps, the more the positive influences of the camp experience tend to be. They build from year-to-year and become part of their character long-term. They have memories, values and friendships that continue into adulthood,” Cote says.

Cote adds that there are several factors parents should consider when selecting a residential summer camp: ACA accreditation; program flexibility, with programs ranging from full choice to structured; length of stay, from anywhere from two to eight weeks; distance from home, comparing the environment you want for your child with your own level of comfort; and price — traditional sleepaway summer camps range in cost from $450 to $1,000 a week. Many times there are tuition breaks and scholarships for children with more limited incomes.

Oh, the days when summer camps were all the rage! Every year, thousands of girls either dread or look forward to attending several days or several weeks at a girl’s summer camp. For most, girls camps mean fun in the sun, laughs and new friends. Many girls spend weeks looking forward to camp activities and events, while others aren’t so sure.

Girls camps offer a multitude of activities to suit nearly every taste, but most offer summer activities like swimming, horseback riding, water skiing, rock climbing, arts and crafts and drama, just to name a few.

Depending on the wants and needs of large groups of girls in different parts of the country, girls camps also offer canoeing, river rafting, hiking or even fashion events. The sky is the limit when it comes to ideas, and camp counselors do their best to make sure that everyone has fun during their camp stay.

There are camps that are held for a day and there are residential camps that have a fixed curriculum that incorporates recreation with learning. Whether you are planning a summer camp or planning on going to summer camp, it is a good idea to have a plan of action. As a camp coordinator, you have to plan events, activities and entertainment for the participants. There are many themes you can come up with, but to get the most participation out of a theme you have to make them sound fun and attractive. Remember that camp is about fun and enjoyment. As a camp participant you want your stay at camp to be enjoyable and something that will create memories of a lifetime.

When coming up with ideas for activities you need to know all about the facilities and their accommodations. Do you have a gym, baseball and football field, or a place to implement these types of games? Do you have hiking trails, lakes, rivers, boats, canoes, swimming, snorkeling or diving? You should have all this information available to you as to be able to fulfill a complete and full schedule for your participants.

Now that you have the information on what capabilities your facility has you can start making your plans. First you have to make the decisions on what type of activities or events you are going to do. Play games, cooking, nature hikes and exploration, mystery excursions, and so on. After you have come up with everything you are planning on doing, you then need to name your events. To name your events, you really need to be creative. You want to make the sound fun and exciting. But at the same time you do not want to over glorify the names as to lead to disappointment to the participants. You need to pick a name that will make the participants excited to participate without giving false expectations on what the program is all about.

Say if you are going to have an outdoor cooking activity, you need to come up with a unique name for it. Let’s say something like, Cooking In The Wild. Now that you have your theme, how are you going to implement it? Would you make burgers on the grill? What would you call them to give it some excitement, Survivor Burgers, after the television show Survivor? It takes a lot of time, planning and creativity to make any event a success.

I have listed some ideas below that could be a theme for an event along with a suggested description of what that event might entail.

Wonders of Nature
For this event you might want to venture into insects, rodents, land formations, mosses, trees or birds. This type of event of has many options to choose from.

All Stars
For this event you would set up sporting games. Be if football, basketball, soccer, water balloons, Frisbee events and what ever other activities in the sporting them you can come up with.

Survivor
This is an event that could be set up on the television series “Survivor”. You can set up treasure hunts, obstacle courses or play a creative game on survival.

When kids go to summer camp some feel as if they are being shipped off to get out of mom and dads hair, but that’s not the case in many instances. Usually both parents work and it’s the most feasible way to care for them.

This year why not do something different for the child that has gone to summer camp, why not send them a care package after they have been at camp for a week. Most kids are very jealous of their friends getting mail and packages. Lets face it everyone enjoys getting mail.

The care package does not have to be one that you put together. With your hectic schedule an already made one is best chosen. With retailers of today of care packages and gift baskets there are many to choose from.

You may want a simple care package, for example: animal cookies, single serve Oreo cookies, Single serve chocolate chips, sweet tarts, skittles, pretzels, starburst, peppermint patty, granola bars and some M & Ms to top it all off. Snack care packages as this are easily order through a retailer and you can designate the ship to address in the order. Most also allow for a message, such as love mom and dad.

So this summer when you send the kids off to camp and they whine about coming home, send them a great care package. It will show them they are missed and most of all loved. Maybe just maybe they will look forward to going to summer camp next year!

Several people asked me to put together an article about running a successful summer camp. Along with other articles I have in mind, I would like to make them available to the greatest amount of people.

Running a summer camp takes gumption, even if it is for a week or two. It can be exhausting. It is not for the feint of heart or the hobbyists. It is of course for the professional business owner, a good option in extending their programs into the summer months.

Last year, I saw first hand how much joy and fun a summer camp could bring to the children whom I usually taught to dance.

I’ve generated a checklist of things to do before you go ahead with your summer camp plans.

1. Find a rental place and negotiate for an extension of hours. Kids sometimes need to be dropped off at seven in the morning and picked up as late as five thirty. That’s the nature of the business. So when you are trying to find a rental place, you will have to point out the fact that limited business hours don’t make sense. Try to get a package together that will suit both you and the renter.

2. Once you have a place in mind, get your fire check. Find out what if any kind of equiptment you need. Most small extinguishers are not even permitted as the main extinguishers in home daycare environments. So a fire inspection is an affordable way to find out quickly what you need to get. Often times, stoves that don’t have proper venting need to be fixed up. You can make this a condition of your lease.

3. Try to figure out affordable ways to advertise within the schools. Most static magazines ads don’t truly work. What does work is direct marketing. You will get farther just by personally handing out flyers or sending them through to schools than posting a huge ad in a newspaper.

4. Try to generate some newsworthliness to see if you can get some free advertising by the local TV station.

5. Consult provincial or state listings about age and also the amount of kids you can have. Then, wisely crunch the numbers and figure out how many staff you can have.

6. Hire your staff. Consider their qualifications in the area they will be instructing but also watch them around kids when they’re not ‘on’ to find out if they have compassionate hearts. If they don’t, you don’t need them. In as much as possible in this situation, realize that this is daycare and you will want to have adults for your staff as much as possible. On the one hand, it isn’t illegal to hire teenagers for these positions and I have personally worked with phenomenal teenagers. It’s about the liability factor. Adults tend to look at a situation and judge it for safety. That is a skills teenagers need to learn…so why not pair both adults and teenagers for maximum safety.
